Intellectual property theft (the illegal copying, reproduction, sale, or unauthorized use of another’s work) is a worldwide problem — more than $11 billion is lost to intellectual property theft every year. Because intellectual property is valuable and conceivably easy to replicate, intellectual property theft is a worldwide responsibility.

Intellectual property theft is a serious crime. In the United States and in many other countries, trademark, patent, and copyright laws provide for severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of intellectual property products and materials. Under U.S. law, infringement may result in civil damages of up to $150,000.00 and/or criminal penalties of up to five years imprisonment and/or fines of $250,000.00 per offense.
